We had but one lonely little tulip at our house this year, and it did not blossom until after all the neighbors flowers because it was in constant shade. This kids sung to it, and hugged it, and the girls pretended to be it's mommy. Hazel was especially bonded to "tulip" so she got to pick it right before his petals fell off.
